Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a holiday observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a holiday in most of them.

St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

So, what began as a tradition to provide what is right and humane, has now become a commercial fanfare where the true meaning of the sacrifice of St. Velentinus has become a contrast and turned into exchanging of gifts and cards.

It’s not all bad as there is a large population who share their most intimate and difficult emotions on this day considering that it would make things easier to share given the backdrop of “THE V DAY”. Traditional practices of proposals have now gone a step ahead with new and innovative ideas that people today use to confess their affection towards each other. Gone are the days when it was just one day where expenses were to be made and just one gift or one dinner would suffice. Now the Valentine’s Day has extended to the Valentine’s Week phenomenon.

Talking about gifting, the traditional gifting started as a gesture of affection towards the other person and was shown during celebration or on special occasions. Today, the gifting scenario has changed as there are a lot of options available to ‘gift’ and show your affection. It is an understood message that if you do not ‘show your affection’ via gifting, the affection has no value. They need not be expensive gifts all the time, but the term ‘gift’ has got a whole new meaning from being a gesture to a demand.
